Universal is absolutely towering over the studios and streamers when it comes to this year’s BAFTA nominations.
Thanks to “The Brutalist” (nine nominations), “Anora” and “Wicked” (seven each), plus “Nosferatu” (five), “The Wild Robot” (three) and “Monkey Man” (one), Universal and its offshoot label Focus Features have amassed an astonishing 32 nominations in total, twice that of its nearest competitor, Netflix. The streamer landed 16 overall, led by the 11 from “Emilia Pérez.”
But Universal could have had five more had it not offloaded Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror “The Substance” before Cannes (Mubi acquired the film, helping the arthouse distributor to six nominations together with “Bird”).
Further down, the nascent distributor Black Bear U.K. had a phenomenal year thanks to the 11 nominations for “Conclave” (which, ironically, was released by Focus in the U.S.), and three for “Sing Sing.” Black Bear’s total of 12 was two up on Disney, which earned 10, most coming from Searchlight’s “A Complete Unknown.”
