Amazon MGM Partners With Sony for Overseas Theatrical Distribution

Amazon MGM Studios has partnered with Sony Pictures Entertainment for international distribution on four of its upcoming releases through March 2026. Sony will handle releasing these titles in all international territories, as Amazon MGM intends to establish its own theatrical distribution infrastructure overseas.

The partnership will begin with Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt,” set for a limited domestic release on the awards season-friendly date of Oct. 10, with an expansion on Oct. 17. The psychological drama stars Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield and follows the fallout after a college student levels a serious accusation against a professor.

Into 2026, Sony will also handle international distribution on “Mercy,” a Chris Pratt-starring thriller directed by Timur Bekmambetov, set to release domestically on Jan. 23; “Crime 101,” a heist ensemble film led by Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Halle Berry, hitting North American theaters on Feb. 13; and “Project Hail Mary,” an Andy Weir adaptation starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, set to launch stateside on March 20.

Though Sony will only handle the full international rollouts on those four features, the agreement is described as a multi-year deal. After “Project Hail Mary,” Amazon MGM plans to begin directly distributing its own theatrical titles in territories overseas where it launches owned and operated offices (exactly where that may be remains undisclosed for now). Sony will continue to provide support in other international markets where Amazon elects not to set up shop.

The deal covers the bulk of Amazon MGM’s coming theatrical slate, though “Sarah’s Oil,” a biographical drama about oil magnate Sarah Rector, will not be distributed by Sony overseas. Amazon is putting out the film domestically on Nov. 7. Following the calendar, Amazon MGM’s first venture handling international distribution will be on the Colleen Hoover adaptation “Verity,” starring Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett and Anne Hathaway. That hits North American theaters on May 15, 2026.
