Now in its third edition, Content Americas, the Miami-based event aimed at the Latin and Hispanic markets, with telenovelas, series, documentaries, and formats, continues to try to bridge the gap between creative communities in Latin America, Spain and Portugal and the larger global scene. One of its key initiatives is the Copro Pitch, aimed at facilitating international co-production deals and featuring projects from Caponeto-Fremantle, Vertice 360, and Druzina Content this year.
Selected from more than 60 submissions, the five projects at the Copro Pitch 2025 span a wide range of subjects and genres. Argentina’s Listos Para Rodar arrives in Miami with a documentary series on the mental and physical toll of being a professional athlete in “Insane” while its neighboring country of Brazil bets on the potential of a high-concept sci-fi franchise with Bactéria Filmes and Druzina Content’s “Tales of Tomorrow: Prelude to a Revolution” and the modern Western with Cinefilm’s “The Guardians.”
Joining the three projects in the run for a prize of $20,000 worth of marketing to support development and pre-sales promotion are “The Perfect Target” from Mexico’s Caponeto and Spain’s “Lucio’s Treasure,” courtesy of Vertice 360.
Mexico-based production company Caponeto joins forces with Fremantle, the production and distribution powerhouse behind hit formats such as “Got Talent” and “Idols,” for “The Perfect Target,” which sets out to merge the worlds of advertising and politics through humor. “Latin America—and the world at large—is filled with politicians who generate controversy and often become comedic figures,” the producers tell Variety. “In the middle of the woke era, a right-wing wave is rising like a tsunami. The series is a sharp, entertaining mix of humor and thriller, but at its core, it’s a character-driven story about two alpha males forced to work together despite their clashing egos.”
“Lucio’s Treasure” will be pitched at Content Americas by veteran Spanish producer Alberto Rull (“El Ultimo Verano,” “Colza, the Invisible Enemy”). The series follows the titular character, who lives in disguise as a bricklayer in Paris but is, in reality, the man responsible for the largest network of traveler’s check counterfeiters, which endangers the stability of the First National City Bank of America. “This series can become a great international series,” Rull tells Variety. “It has all the necessary elements: the action takes place in Paris at the beginning of the ‘80s, the CIA, Scotland Yard, and high-profile French personalities participate in the investigation, and the protagonist is a Spanish exile and anarchist of a kind, charismatic character.”
“Tales of Tomorrow: Prelude to a Revolution” expands on the universe of “Tales of Tomorrow,” a Brazilian indie film released in 2021 that has played over 30 festivals and amassed a slew of awards at genre festivals across the U.S. Series producer Luciana Druzina, CEO of Druzina Content and a member of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, tells Variety that sci-fi has a “very large audience in Brazil” and makes up for “some of the biggest box office hits in Latin America.” “Prelude to a Revolution” offers Druzina and the team the chance to “make fantastic stories with our own style, with our locations and our culture.”
The second Brazilian project at this year’s Copro Pitch, “The Guardians,” also taps into genre, promising to be a “contemporary Western drama” that “captivates from the first episode.” Following the journey of a First Nation family in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, the six-episode series will broach environmental and political issues key to the region, with producers telling Variety that the show will be a “bold statement on the issues shaping our world today” and offer “a unique perspective on the international criminal economy, exploring the underreported phenomenon of land grabbing in a way that has never been seen before.”
From a Brazilian Western to the very real lives of professional athletes, “Insane” vows to give viewers an inside look into the minds of extreme athletes who push the boundaries of the human body and mind. While most of the cast is still under wraps, the producers can reveal to Variety that the first episode will focus on the Benavides Brothers, Argentine Dakar motorcycle racers.
A brief breakdown of CoPro Pitch 2024 titles:
Insane (Listos Para Rodar, Argentina)
“Insane” takes viewers deep into the minds of extreme athletes, uncovering the mental ‘hacks’ they use to turn fear into triumph and push beyond limits. Through gripping stories and expert insights, the series reveals the true cost of glory and offers practical tools for anyone facing their own challenges. More than inspiration, it’s a guide to unlocking human potential. Produced by the team behind “Los González,” “Nahum” and “La Cruda.”
Lucio’s Treasure (Vertice 360, Spain)
In 1980s Paris, “Lucio’s Treasure” chronicles the true story of Lucio Urtubia, a cunning Spanish bricklayer turned audacious counterfeiter. With a fierce commitment to justice, Lucio orchestrates a bold scheme to undermine Citibank by flooding the world with fake Travelers’ Checks. Pursued by the CIA, this gripping series dives into the tension between rebellion and survival, proving one man’s ingenuity can defy an entire system. Produced by Vertice 360 in partnership with Red Arrow International.
Tales of Tomorrow: Prelude to a Revolution (Bactéria Filmes and Druzina Content, Brazil)
In 2169, Andrea fights to break down the wall that surrounds Porto 01. Her main objective is to destroy the Core, responsible for creating thousands of virtual realities delivered as a kind of drug to the city’s population.
