Ex-Foo Fighters Drummer Josh Freese Lists 10 Reasons Why He Got Fired

As he promised last week, ex-Foo Fighters drummer Josh Freese has shared a comical list of the 10 possible reasons he might have been fired from the band — none of which seem terribly realistic.

Freese announced he had been booted from the band, seemingly unceremoniously, last Thursday, sharing that the band had done so with one of the most callous non-explanations in the working world: that they’d decided “to go in a different direction,” adding, “No reason was given.”

Reps for the band offered no reason or insight, but musically speaking, the term “different direction” is almost comical, as Freese is one of the most versatile drummers working in the rock realm, with credits ranging from Sting to Guns N’ Roses, from Nine Inch Nails to Weezer, and at Coachella in 2023 he played with both 1000 Gecs and Danny Elfman — on the same day. Thus, it’s no surprise that Freese said he was “shocked and disappointed” by the decision, although he concluded by saying, “Stay tuned for my ‘Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters’ list.”

The comical list, ranging from “Once whistled [the Foo Fighters’ hit] ‘My Hero’ for a week solid on tour,” “Never even once tried growing a beard,” and that he could only name one song by Grohl’s hometown heroes Fugazi are just three highlights, along with a crack that he’d promised Noodles, his former bandmate in the Offspring, that he could be the Foos’ fourth guitarist. (“But you promised!” Noodles joked in the comments.)

After months of speculation, Freese joined the band officially in May of 2023 and seemed set for a long stint, as the band toured relentlessly in the wake of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins’ sudden death while the group was on tour in South America. The Foos have kept a relatively low profile in recent months, and have just one upcoming show on the books, an October date in Singapore.
