Flying Lotus Boards Asian Action Epic ‘The Furious’

Influential electronic musician, producer and filmmaker Flying Lotus has signed on to the soundtrack of Asian action showstopper film “The Furious.”

The film, from Japanese director Tanigaki Kenji, is written by Mak Tin Shu and follows a simple tradesman (portrayed by mainland Chinese star Xie Miao) who fights his way through a complex web of criminals and evil agents in a frantic attempt to win back his kidnapped daughter by any means necessary.

Produced by the region’s top producer Bill Kong (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” “Hero”), Frank Hui and Shan Tam, the film features a pan-Asian cast that also includes Indonesian’s Joe Taslim (“The Raid,” “Mortal Kombat”), Thai star Jeeja Yanin (“Chocolate”), Yang Enyu, Brian Le, Joey Iwanaga and Yayan Ruhian.

Michael J. Werner, former principal at Fortissimo Films, and Todd Brown and Aram Tertzakian of XYZ Films serve as executive producers. Kong’s Edko Films is financing the movie and will distribute in Hong Kong, Macao and mainland China. XYZ Films is handling sales in all other territories and is representing the film at the Cannes Film Market.

“I’m so happy to share the news that our friend Flying Lotus is joining the family and going to give us a great track,” Kong tells Variety.

“I showed him [Flying Lotus] clips of the film and a preview of our first cut of the film, which he really liked a lot, and he wanted to work closely with us, and we wanted to work closely with him,” Kong adds. “He’s writing a song for us for the film. I’m looking forward to receiving that track. As soon as we get the track we will finish off, then our film will be complete, and then will be ready.”

The film is beginning its final mix imminently. “We are spending a lot of time on this, because it’s a very specialized action movie for us,” Kong says. “We want to bring to the world something very different. We want to enlighten the world with a new take on action films.”

“I’m hoping that we can launch the film in an important world stage,” Kong adds.

“The Furious” could also become a franchise. “I want to do more of such kind of action films. Maybe even down the road, I may even want to explore into expanding this into streaming series,” Kong says.
