From Kamala Harris to Michelle Obama

Politicians, celebrities and spectators alike arrived at the Democratic National Convention this week suited up.

While the DNC, which takes place at Chicago’s United Center from Aug. 19-22, is an unlikely place to scour sartorial trends, there have already been more than a few bonafide fashion moments that make a convincing case for fashion’s place on the political stage.

Naturally, the most viral fashion moment came from Vice President Kamala Harris herself, who is set to become the official Democratic presidential nominee this week. Harris entered the stage on Tuesday, the second night of the convention, in a stunning two-piece tan suit from Chloé, consisting of a tailored double-breasted jacket and heel-grazing pants, both made out of wool grain de poudre and featuring gold-toned detailing.

The pants in particular, with a slightly oversized, boyish silhouette, is a departure from the forgettable straight-legged crops we’re used to seeing on female politicians. Best of all? The tan hue on the Chloé website is called, fittingly, Coconut Brown. Now that’s a hidden meaning.

Later on Tuesday night, Michelle Obama took the stage alongside husband and former president Barack Obama to formally endorse Harris for president. Despite having a hard act to follow, she did not disappoint, addressing the crowd in a navy blue bespoke pantsuit from the New York City-based luxury label Monse. The fashion-forward ensemble, made up of an innovative criss-cross jacket and tuxedo cuff trousers, added a playful touch to a look that can easily devolve into office-core drab.

Meanwhile, from the crowd, the daughter of First Man hopeful Doug Emhoff, Ella Emhoff, supported her parents in a stunning Thom Browne plaid suit (accessorized with that camo Harris-Walz hat). And lawyer Angela Alsobrooks, a longtime mentee of Harris, made her way to the podium in a white two-piece set, made up of a knee-length pencil skirt and tailored blazer with gold-tone hardware.
