It’s been more than five years since Gwyneth Paltrow launched the viral “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle and it remains one of Goop’s most talked-about products.
“That product is so fascinating because we were messing around with different scents one day and I smelled something and I was like ‘Oh, that smells like…you know…’” Paltrow said about the product’s inception during a talk at the Manifesting Summit this past weekend.
She went on to explain that it began as a joke and then “all of a sudden it was literally on the website, and we broke the internet again.”
“But I kept it on the site because there is an aspect to women’s sexuality that I think we’re socialized to feel a lot of shame and I sort of loved this punk rock idea,” she continued. “We are beautiful and we are awesome and go fuck yourself.”
While the “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle — which was developed in collaboration with Heretic Parfum and includes notes of geranium, citrusy bergamot and cedar — is now discontinued, it spawned multiple other provocatively-titled Goop scents, such as “This Smells Like My Orgasm” “This Smells Like My Prenup” and “Hands off My Vagina.”
