Hiccup and Toothless will return to the big screen in 2027. A live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon 2” is currently in the works, Universal Pictures announced on Wednesday during its presentation at CinemaCon, the annual convention of movie theater owners.

The movie will soar to theaters on June 11, 2027. On its current release date, “How to Train Your Dragon 2” will open a week after Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.”

News of the sequel comes two months ahead of the theatrical release of “How to Train Your Dragon” on June 13. Earlier on Wednesday, Universal screened the live-action remake for the first time at CinemaCon to enthusiastic reviews.

“We are so excited to give your theaters a summer title in two years time,” the franchise’s veteran director Dean DeBlois said on stage at Caesars Palace. He was joined by Gerard Butler, who portrays Stoick the Vast, as well as Nico Parker, who plays a love interest of the Stoick’s son.

Set on the mythical viking village of Berk, “How to Train Your Dragon” follows the adventures of a scrawny misfit teen named Hiccup, who befriends an injured dragon he calls Toothless. Their bond defies centuries of tradition, where vikings and dragons have been bitter enemies for generations. The sequel is set five years later and follows a 20-year-old Hiccup and pals as they battle a madman who wants to conquer the world with a dragon army.

DeBlois wrote and direct the live-action remake, having previously steered the DreamWorks Animation trilogy — 2010’s “How to Train Your Dragon,” 2014’s “How to Train Your Dragon 2” and 2019’s “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” — to the big screen. Those films generated a combined $1.6 billion worldwide along with four Oscar nominations.
