As for the film itself, “Black Bag” has gained mostly positive reviews from film critics and general audiences, alike. In fact, Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge calls the spy thriller “a riveting genre exercise that respects our intelligence” and “a reminder of just how enjoyable Soderbergh can be when he’s riffing on well-worn genre material,” in his review.
Written by David Koepp and directed by Steven Soderbergh, “Black Bag” follows George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender), a legendary spy in British Secret Intelligence Service who is tasked with finding a mole amongst his ranks — including his friends, colleagues and even his wife Kathryn Woodhouse (Cate Blanchett).
The film also stars Marisa Abela, Tom Burke, Naomie Harris, Regé-Jean Page, Pierce Brosnan and others.
