Masaaki Yuasa Launches New Studio Ame Pippin in Tokyo

Acclaimed Japanese animation director Masaaki Yuasa has announced the launch of his own animation studio, ame pippin. Teaming up with industry giants Asmik Ace, Inc., Aniplex Inc. and CoMix Wave Films Inc., Yuasa’s new venture promises to bring fresh and innovative content to the world of animation.

Yuasa, known for his unique and imaginative storytelling, has been a prominent figure in the animation world for decades. In 2013, he co-founded the hugely popular Japanese animation studio Science Saru with producer Eunyoung Choi. That studio produced Yuasa’s 2023 Golden Globe-nominated feature “Inu-Oh,” Netflix’s “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” and episodes of “Adventure Time” and “Star Wars: Visions.”

In the animation community, Yuasa’s most highly regarded work may be 2004’s “Mind Game,” considered by many to be one of the most important Japanese works of the 21st century. His more recent films, such as “Lu Over The Wall” and “Ride Your Wave,” have garnered further international acclaim and numerous awards, including an Annecy Cristal award for best feature the former and a Fantasia best animated feature award for the latter.

“We are pleased to announce the establishment of a new studio in collaboration with Asmik Ace, Aniplex, and CoMix Wave Films,” said Yuasa in a statement to the global animation community. “In this era of dramatic change, we hope to move forward with a steady yet flexible approach, always keeping the future in sight. We deeply appreciate your guidance and support, and we would be truly grateful for any opportunity to collaborate with you.”

The new studio will be based in Tokyo, a city known for its vibrant animation scene. With the backing of the aforementioned companies, ame pippin looks a lock to become a major player in the animation world. Each of the supporting companies brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the table, ensuring that ame pippin will have the resources and support needed to succeed.

Asmik Ace, Inc., established in 1998, has a long history of producing and distributing both live-action and animated films. The company has been involved in the production of critically acclaimed films such as “Tekkonkinkreet” and “Paranoia Agent.” Aniplex Inc., a diversified entertainment company, is known for its extensive range of anime-related businesses, including the production of popular series like “Demon Slayer” and “Fate/Grand Order.” CoMix Wave Films, renowned for its work on films like “Your Name” and “Weathering With You,” brings its expertise in animated movie production and distribution to the partnership.
