Sony Music Entertainment label RCA Records Greater China has struck a partnership with Iris Chengdu, the independent label and music collective founded by Chengdu-based producer Andre Grant (aka Harakiri).
The partnership will launch five albums over the next 12 months, showcasing Iris Chengdu’s roster of artists including Vinida Weng, Haysen Cheng, Miles, Swag Kelly, and Harakiri himself. Weng, a female rapper known for pioneering new styles in Chinese hip-hop, has already released her album worldwide and performed in her hometown of Fuzhou.
Harakiri has established himself as a pioneer in Chinese hip-hop, having contributed to China’s first Afrobeat track and created hits for American rapper Jay Park and Chinese hip-hop group Higher Brothers.
The partnership aims to leverage RCA China’s global distribution capabilities with Iris Chengdu’s creative edge in the growing Chinese hip-hop market. Chengdu has become widely recognized as the epicenter of China’s evolving hip-hop scene and is credited with nurturing the country’s new generation of rappers.
“Chinese hip hop is more than just a rapidly growing genre – it is a rising cultural movement that has the potential to redefine the global music landscape,” said Doyen Chung, managing director of RCA Records Greater China. “Through this unique partnership, we aim to unlock new dimensions in creativity, connecting our artists’ voices with more fans to showcase the power of Chinese hip hop music to audiences worldwide.”
Andrew Chan, CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, Greater China, added: “Together, we will strive to showcase a new wave of music genres that resonates both locally and on the global stage, propelling talent from China to the world.”
Harakiri described the partnership as “an exciting milestone” that would amplify the label’s ability to share stories globally while staying true to its roots. “Together, we’re bridging cultures, connecting audiences, and taking music beyond borders,” he said.
