Stephen Curry is officially teaming up with Comcast to tell the true story of the underdog cheer team that made history, Variety has exclusively learned.
Curry and Erick Peyton are executive producing “Spirit” with their multimedia company, Unanimous Media, in partnership with The WorkShop Content Studios and FreshFly. The four-part series follows the team from George Washington High School that became the first cheer squad from Philadelphia’s school district to make it all the way to the NCA High School Nationals.
The series is directed by Matt Howley, a Philadelphia native. Along with the series announcement, Unanimous Media has released an official trailer, showcasing the cheer team as they carve out a new story for themselves.
“‘Spirit’ is a coming-of-age story about a group of young athletes beating the odds and showing how a sport can transform an individual, a team and a school,” Curry and Peyton said in a joint statement. “Throughout the series, we follow their journey as we see how competitive cheerleading gives these kids a sense of purpose and possibility. ‘Spirit’ is the ultimate underdog story, and we’re excited for audiences to see the team do what they do best: prove people wrong.”
“Spirit” is not the first time that basketball champion Curry has worked on a Hollywood project following the 2023 Sundance premiere of the documentary “Stephen Curry: Underrated.” Most recently, he had his first scripted television role in “Mr. Throwback,” a mockumentary series that he executive produced. He also co-produced “Sentenced,” a Peacock documentary exploring the modern epidemic of childhood illiteracy.
“Spirit” will be available to stream Feb. 27 exclusively on Comcast’s Black Experience on Xfinity. Watch the trailer below.
