Tencent Strikes European Deal With ADN for ‘Blades of the Guardians’

Chinese streaming giant Tencent has inked a deal with France-based Animation Digital Network (ADN) for its martial arts epic “Blades of the Guardians,” Variety has learned. The agreement gives ADN rights to the animated series across its subscription VOD and OTT platforms, bolstering its slate of premium global content.

The acquisition aligns with Tencent Video’s broader global push to position animation as a growth engine for the platform. The streamer is actively courting international partners as part of its long-term strategy to bring high-end Chinese animation to wider audiences.

Three years in the making, the series combines stylized action with cinematic storytelling, drawing inspiration from the Sui and Tang dynasties. Produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures alongside Coloured Pencil Animation, “Blades of the Guardians” aims to marry historic detail with modern flair.

“Blades of the Guardian” is adapted from the hit Chinese comic and follows mercenary Dao Ma as he traverses the perilous deserts of the Western Regions. Tasked with a seemingly simple escort mission to Chang’an, Dao Ma quickly becomes entangled in imperial conspiracies, unleashing a chain of bloodshed, betrayal and destiny.

Tencent Video remains a dominant player in China’s streaming market, offering a deep library of dramas, features, variety shows, sports, documentaries and animation. With a growing portfolio of original animated content, the company is ramping up co-productions with top-tier studios around the world to develop projects with global appeal, at the same time that Chinese features are starting to gain popularity with global audiences at the box office.

The “Blades of the Guardians” deal was announced during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where Tencent continues to showcase its commitment to expanding the reach of Chinese animation on the world stage.
