True Colours Acquires ‘Familia’ Ahead of Venice Horizons Premiere

True Colours has acquired the international sales rights to “Familia,” directed by Francesco Costabile. The film will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in the Horizons section. Variety is debuting the film’s trailer (below).

“Familia” is a dark melodrama that weaves together elements of psychological thriller and social commentary. The film follows the harrowing journey of Luigi, a young man grappling with a toxic family legacy and his entanglement with extremist ideologies. Based on Luigi Celeste’s autobiographical book “It Won’t Be Like This Forever,” the story delves into the destructive cycles of violence and the struggle for redemption.

The cast includes Francesco Gheghi, Barbara Ronchi (“Kidnapped” by Marco Bellochio), and Francesco Di Leva (“Nostalgia” by Mario Martone). Cinematography is by Giuseppe Maio and the score is by Valerio Vigliar.

“Familia” is produced by Attilio de Razza and Nicola Picone at Rome-based Tramp Limited. The co-producers are Nicola Giuliano at Rome’s Indigo Film and Pierpaolo Verga at Naples’ O’Groove, and in association with Medusa Film.

Costabile, who previously garnered critical acclaim for his debut feature “Una femmina,” which premiered at Berlinale Panorama, “continues his exploration of intense, character-driven narratives that challenge social norms and institutional failures,” according to a press statement.

“Familia” is set to debut in Italian theaters on Oct. 2. The film will be distributed in Italy by Medusa Film.

Other titles on True Colours’ slate include Sergio Castellitto’s “Fortunata,” which premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, with Jasmine Trinca winning best actress. The film tells the story of a 30-year-old woman who raises her daughter by herself, living in a deprived suburb in Rome, as she dreams of a better life.
