Impossible’ Film Rockets to No. 1 in Kore
Hollywood returned to the top of the Korean box office in emphatic fashion this past weekend (May 16–18) as “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” debuted with $5.4 million, accounting for a commanding 66.63% of total weekend revenue.
The latest installment in the long-running action franchise, led by Tom Cruise, drew 759,363 admissions across a massive 2,385 screens, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council. Including limited previews, the film has grossed $5.5 million from 762,955 total admissions.
After four weekends atop the chart, South Korean crime thriller “Yadang: The Snitch” finally ceded the No. 1 spot, landing in second with $820,055. The domestic hit added another 116,846 admissions, lifting its cumulative gross to $21.8 million from more than 3.2 million tickets sold since its April 16 release.
In third, “A Minecraft Movie” continued its strong run with $421,197 and 63,479 admissions. The game-based title has now grossed $8.8 million in Korea, crossing 1.3 million admissions. Local action-drama “The Old Woman With the Knife” remained steady in fourth with $339,704, pushing its total to $3.4 million from 493,941 cumulative admissions.
Marvel’s “Thunderbolts*” slid to fifth with $271,280 and 38,873 viewers. Its total now stands at $6.4 million from nearly 890,000 admissions.
In sixth, horror sequel “Final Destination: Bloodlines” opened with $201,769 and 27,557 admissions. Including weekday previews, the film has earned $332,539 to date. South Korean supernatural thriller “Holy Night: Demon Hunters” landed at No. 7 with $84,093, taking its total to $5.1 million.
Japanese drama “Happyend” followed in eighth with $71,119, lifting its cumulative gross to $559,494 from nearly 80,000 admissions. Long-running anime release “Attack on Titan The Movie: The Last Attack” took ninth with $79,623 and 9,824 new admissions, pushing its Korean total past $6.3 million.
Debuting at No. 10, South Korean documentary “Meet Again, Homeland” earned $51,631 from 7,577 admissions in a limited 216-screen release.
With a clear market leader in “Mission: Impossible” and local titles continuing to show resilience, the Korean box office surged this weekend, generating over $8.8 million from the top 10 titles.
