Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” soared to the top of China’s box office over the May 30–June 1 weekend, earning RMB184.5 million ($25.6 million), according to Artisan Gateway.
The film’s high-octane action sequences and Imax screenings contributed to its strong performance. Imax accounted for $4.9 million of the film’s total China box office. The China opening weekend is also Imax’s biggest for a Hollywood title in 2025.
Imax CEO Rich Gelfond said: “We were particularly encouraged by the great Imax results in China, which bodes well for the many Hollywood tentpoles set for release there in the weeks ahead.”
In second place, the Chinese animated fantasy “Endless Journey of Love” from Maoyan Movie earned $7.6 million. Directed by Zhou Tienan and Yu Ao, the film is set in 1930s China and follows village girl Qian Xiao, who gains the power to control time, making her a target of powerful forces. As she uncovers the metropolis’s hidden secrets, she faces peril and the cost of her gift. The voice cast includes Karry Wang, Liu Xiaoyu, and Zhou Shen.
The latest installment of the beloved Japanese franchise, “Doraemon: Nobita’s Art World Tales,” opened in third place with $7.5 million. Directed by Teramoto Yukiyo, the film sees Doraemon and his friends dive into the world of paintings, embarking on a grand adventure. The voice cast features Wasabi Mizuta, Megumi Ōhara, and Yumi Kakazu.
Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” slipped to fourth place, earning $6.6 million in its second weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $17.8 million.
Rounding out the top five, Hong Kong action thriller “Behind the Shadows” debuted with $4.3 million. Directed by Jonathan Li and Choy Man-yu, the film stars Louis Koo as a private detective investigating a complex case involving adultery and murder. The cast also includes Liu Kuan-ting and Chrissie Chau.
The total weekend box office revenue reached $58.2 million, marking a significant rebound from previous weeks. China’s year-to-date box office now stands at $3.82 billion, reflecting a 26.6% increase compared to the same period last year.
