Java Films, a leading global documentary sales company based in Paris, France, has acquired world rights, excluding the countries of co-production (Ukraine, France and Belgium), as well as Czech TV rights, to director Yegor Troyanovsky’s feature documentary “Cuba & Alaska” ahead of the film’s world premiere at Sheffield Doc Fest. The first look trailer has been released.

The film, which will also screen at the Brussels Intl. Film Festival in the Directors’ Week Competition, is an intimate and often darkly humorous profile of two female Ukrainian medics, “Cuba”(Yulia Sidorova) and “Alaska” (Olexandra), on the frontlines of the war. Mostly comprising footage from phones and GoPro cameras attached to their helmets and chests, the film offers rare access to the medics’ daily lives, their reliance on each other and a testament to the camaraderie required to survive in this world.

The film is produced by Olha Bregman for 2Brave Productions (Ukraine), Christian Popp for Tag Film (France), and Hanne Phlypo for Clin d’Oeil Films (Belgium).

The producers said that Java Films’ Kathryn Bonnici and Donatien Pierda “understood our vision from day one at CPH:Forum, and their passion for the story has been incredible to witness. Having a sales agent who truly gets what we’re trying to say about the human side of this conflict means everything to us. We couldn’t ask for better partners to help share ‘Cuba & Alaska’s’ story with audiences worldwide.”

The film’s original soundtrack, including songs by contemporary Ukrainian musical artists such as Serhiy Zhadan, and an original score from composer Frederik van de Moortel, will be released on Spotify on Friday.
