Alia Shawkat, Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, LaKeith Stanfield, Zack Fox and Tony Hale have joined Kristen Stewart in “The Wrong Girls” at Neon.
The film, which marks Dylan Meyer‘s directorial debut, began shooting last week, becoming one of the first independent films going into production in Los Angeles following January’s devastating wildfires. Neon will release the film theatrically in the U.S. and represent the international rights.
Over the course of the film’s 29-day production, which began last week, the film will employ approximately 100 people per day, 95% of which will be local L.A. residents, including Emmy-nominated cinematographer Todd Banhazl (“Winning Time”, Hustlers), singer-songwriter and composer Ty Segall and Emmy-nominated costumer Heidi Bivens (“Euphoria”).
Written and directed by Meyer (“Moxie”), the film follows Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Shawkat), codependent best friends living paycheck to paycheck and bong rip to bong rip, when a case of mistaken identity throws their lives into chaos.
Philadelphia punk band Mannequin Pussy is set to bring their explosive energy to the film with a live performance at a long-shuttered Los Angeles DIY space.

The film will be produced by Maggie McLean, Stewart and Meyer for Nevermind Pictures; Alex McAtee, James Weaver, Rogen and Evan Goldberg for Point Grey; and Allison Carter and Jon Read for Savage Rose Productions under their production and development partnership with Neon. Overseeing for Neon will be Jason Wald, EVP Acquisitions & Production, Claire Timmons, VP Talent Relations, and Kate Gondwe, Manager ADP. The deal was negotiated with WME Independent and UTA Independent Film Group.
“The Wrong Girls” marks Neon and Stewart’s third collaboration following Pablo Larraín’s acclaimed 2021 film “Spencer” and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” in 2022. For her performance as Princess Diana in “Spencer,” Stewart was nominated for best actress at the Oscars.
The deal comes after Neon recently released “Anora,” Sean Baker’s highly acclaimed film starring Mikey Madison. Other recent releases include the Oscar-nominated “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” from Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, and Osgood Perkins’ horror film “Longlegs,” which was the highest grossing independent film of the year at $75 million domestically.
Stewart, Meyer and McLean’s Nevermind Pictures are currently in post-production on Stewart’s directorial debut “The Chronology of Water” starring Imogen Poots.
