From Birkin-toting adults to toy-collecting children, a certain plush toy called a Labubu is the name on everyone’s lips.
The palm-sized collectible figurine was first released in 2015 alongside other Nordic-inspired creatures in a “Monsters” series created by Netherlands-raised illustrator Kasing Lung. While the toys have grown a cultish group of collectors over the years, they’ve surged in popularity in the past few months following a slew of celebrity endorsements, particularly in the K-Pop space.
“Labubu is my baby,” Blackpink’s Lisa said in a Teen Vogue interview earlier this year.
On Friday, the K-Pop star posted a picture of her new pink and yellow tie-dye furry Labubu, and by Sunday, hundreds of eager collectors lined up at the CentralWorld mall in Bangkok to get their hands on the “Big Into Energy” release. The toys, which cost between $13 and $16 each in Asia, are released by the Chinese toymaker Pop Mart in a “blind-box” format, meaning the exact toy character you get is a mystery until opened.
The mystery element, doubled with their limited release, adds to the craze — and is also why they’re reselling on sites such as Kicks Crew and StockX for as high as $700. Of course, the rarer a figure’s chances of showing up in a mystery box, the higher its value. One of the rarest releases is one labeled “Secret,” which buyers have a 1.4% chance of unboxing. It’s currently on auction for $1,920 on StockX.
If you would rather take your chances, though, the Big Into Energy blind box is available for $167 on Amazon, which also sells individual figurines for around $100. This Labubu Big Into Energy Doll is currently on sale for $101 — a 32% discount.
