‘Nightline’ Marks 45th Anniversary With New Logo, ABC News Tribute

As ABC’s “Nightline” hits its 45th anniversary this month, the show is bringing back an updated version of its old logo. Having gone with an all-lowercase “nightline” since 2017, a new take on the show’s all-caps “NIGHTLINE” that had been in use between 1997 and 2017 will now be introduced. (That look itself was inspired by “Nightline’s” original logo, which featured a city skyline embedded in its letters.) According to ABC News, the new logo “honors its iconic legacy, blending elements from its original look with an updated, modern design.”

The change happens as ABC News celebrates the “Nightline” 45th anniversary on March 24 (12:35 a.m. ET) with a special episode, featuring all-new interviews with original anchor Ted Koppel, as well as previous anchors Terry Moran, Dan Harris, Cynthia McFadden, Bill Weir and Dan Abrams. Current “Nightline” rotating anchors Juju Chang and Byron Pitts will anchor together on that episode in honor of the show’s birthday. The episode will feature archival footage and recount “Nightline’s” place in journalism.

The “Nightline” special is part of a day-long celebration at ABC News, where all of its programs and platforms plan to feature items about the show. That includes Chang and Pitts in-studio that morning on “Good Morning America,” followed by Chang on “The View” and Pitts on ABC News Live’s “Prime with Linsey Davis.” The duo will also appear on “GMA3” and ABC News Audio’s “Start Here” podcast, while “World News Tonight” and ABC News Digital will feature stories about the show’s history.

“’Nightline’ is an incredibly important part of ABC News’ 70-year legacy, with a rich history of straightforward journalism that has become a hallmark of the show,” said ABC News president Almin Karamehmedovic. “I was privileged to spend over a decade at ‘Nightline,’ and am so proud of the team today, who continue to build on its exceptional reputation.”

“Nightline” actually had its start in November 1979 as “The Iran Crisis: America Held Hostage,” which looked at the hostage crisis in Iran. March 24 actually marks the 45th anniversary of when the show was relaunched as “Nightline” and broadened out to focus on other topics as well.

“’Nightline’ is delivering some of the most compelling and in-depth journalism on television, tackling complex stories with nuance and integrity,” said ‘Nightline’ exec producer Eman Varoqua. “As we move forward, we’re focused on expanding our storytelling and reaching new audiences while staying true to the hard-hitting, thoughtful reporting that has defined the show for 45 years.”
