‘Red One’ Release Plans Include Barco By HDR
Amazon MGM Studios’ “Red One” will open in theaters in formats including HDR by Barco, as part of a pre-release program for the Belgian cinema tech developer’s new HDR-capable premium line of theater projectors.
In cooperation with AMC Theatres, B&B Theatres, and Regal Cinemas, a specially graded and mastered version of “Red One” will be shown in five newly equipped HDR by Barco cinema auditoriums starting Nov. 15 when the movie opens wide in the U.S. The locations are AMC Americana at Brand 18 in Glendale; AMC Barrywoods 24 in Kansas City; B&B Theatres Red Oak 12 in Dallas; Regal Dania Pointe, Miami-Ft. Lauderdale; and Regal Times Square in New York.
Directed by Jake Kasdan, “Red One” is a Christmas-themed adventure starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans. It’s the fifth movie to be released in HDR by Barco as part of its pilot program. Prior releases were Paramount Animation and Hasbro Entertainment’s “Transformers One,” Dreamworks Animation and Universal’s “The Wild Robot,” Paramount’s “Smile 2” and Warner Bros.’ “Joker: Folie À Deux.”
The program (first announced with the projector unveiling at CinemaCon in April) runs thru the end of the year in advance of HDR by Barco’s commercial launch in 2025.
“HDR by Barco” laser projectors are based on the company’s proprietary “light steering” technology, which, simply put, allows the projector to redistribute light in such a way as to give movies more range between the brightest highlights in sunny scenes and the deepest black tones in scenes shot in dimmer light.
