The Lonely Island Recruits Charli XCX for New Song ‘I Report You to the Cops’
The Lonely Island’s latest song debuted on “Saturday Night Live,” recruiting pop sensation Charli XCX who sang with Andy Samberg about white people in suburban neighborhoods calling the cops. Samberg can be seen polishing his different telephones in varying bright colors with a self-satisfied grin as he prepares to call the police. The sign above his collection of phones reads, “Phones With Which to Snitch.”
In the music video, Weekend Update host Colin Jost is seen being arrested by members of the police outside Samberg’s house as he makes calls to the police. In one part of the song, Samberg and Charli XCX, both dressed in suburban-chic attire, called the cops on a Girl Scout in their neighborhood.
In various scenes around the exterior of their house, Samberg and Charli XCX can be seen looking at neighbors with binoculars, inspecting neighbors’ cars’ distance to their driveway, and posting a sign to the lawn that reads “Curb Your Damn Dog.”
“Here I go, I report you to the cops, and I report you anonymously!” said Samberg, looking Wonder Bread white, wearing a puffy vest and khakis. “I’m gonna sleep like a baby tonight!” croons Samberg.
Pictured on the jury bench in a courtroom, Samberg eats popcorn and sings with a smile, “You better believe I’ll show up for that court day!” Later, Lonely Island member Akiva Schaffer can be seen filming an incident on his smartphone, in a nod to the modern phenomenon of phone owners filming suspect incidents and sharing them to social media.
In the closing scene of the music video, Charli XCX and Samberg are dancing in the street in matching red outfits, both scantily clad, dancing alongside cops and their neighbors.
This song follows Lonely Island’s last hit song featured on “Saturday Night Live,” “Sushi Glory Hole,” a song about secret sushi spots found around New York City.
Charli XCX is the episode’s host and musical guest.
