Courtney Eaton and Sophie Nélisse, two breakout performers from “Yellowjackets,” will co-star in an adaptation of Kathleen Glasgow’s novel, “Girl in Pieces.”
The Space Program, a New York-based independent film production company led by Lizzie Shapiro, Lexi Tannenholtz and Gus Deardoff, will produce the film alongside Eaton and Nélisse.
“Girl in Pieces” was embraced on BookTok, the TikTok literary subculture, and has been on the New York Times young adult bestseller list for more than three consecutive years. It follows Charlie Davis, a young woman recently released from a psychiatric ward in Minnesota after a suicide attempt. After a move across the country to Tucson, Ariz., Charlie tries to piece her life back together among a band of artists and musicians while dealing with the trauma of childhood abuse, self-harm and homelessness. A toxic relationship with a local musician and the reappearance of her friend from the psych ward threaten the delicate life she’s putting together.
In addition to her work on “Yellowjackets,” Eaton has appeared in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Newness” and “Parachute,” the last of which was also produced by The Space Program’s Shapiro. Eaton won the award for best performance at SXSW, where “Parachute” screened.
Nélisse is known for her roles in “The Book Thief” and”Monsieur Lazhar,” as well as for starring in Netflix’s “Close” opposite Noomi Rapace. She was recently seen in the Sundance comedy “Two Women” and will next appear in “Whistle” alongside Dafne Keen and Sky Yang.
Glasgow’s other bestselling novels include “The Glass Girl,” “You’d Be Home Now,” “How to Make Friends With the Dark” and “The Agathas” mystery series (co-written with Liz Lawson).
The Space Program operates as a collective of producers who embody a filmmaker-first approach. The announcement follows The Space Program’s Cannes debut of “The Plague,” directed by Charlie Polinger and starring Joel Edgerton, which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section. It earned some of the festival’s strongest notices. The company is also producing “Pure,” the feature debut of writer and director Catherine Schetina (“The Bear”), starring Zoey Deutch.
